      • 16th team (Thompson / Emanuel) did not weigh-in

At this time, the members of Leggett's Creek would like to take this opportunity to explain what transpired during the weigh-in event to dispel any rumors, but more IMPORTANTLY, ensure the angler community understands that Leggett's Creek Bassmasters (and its members) are committed to governing under the highest standards and maintaining highest level of integrity associated with sponsored tournaments.

Here is a summary of what transpired and how the members of Leggett's Creek decided to remedy this situation on a go forward basis.

SUMMARY of EVENTS:

During the weigh-in process a team brought their catch to the  tub / scale and proceeded to have their lunker weighed in.

As the team was having their lunker weighed, the tub master requested that the team (only one representative was at the tub) dump their remaining fish into the weigh tub and immediately following that place their weigh-in bag over the fish to keep them from splashing / jumping.

The tub master removed the bag and immediately began to place the fish into the Tournament Director's weigh-in bag.  During this process, the Tournament Director noticed an object in the tub.  This object was cylindrical, made of metal and extremely shiny (a shine of a new nickel / dime).  The object was approximately 3" to 4" long and approximately the diameter of an ink pen.

The tub master asked the contestant (while holding it up in front of other anglers) what this was and the contestant replied, "I do not know".  The contestant stated that it was not his and asked if it was Leggett's Creek which we replied no it is not ours.

At that particular time we proceeded to weigh in the team's fish and continued with the event's weigh-in.  Once the scales were closed, the Tournament Director discussed the sequence of events and details with his staff that were present during the event:

(1) an object was not seen in a fish's mouth,

(2) an object was not seen protruding from the fish's anal gland,

(3) the fish did not appear to be altered

(4) the object never made it to the weigh-in bag at the scale, and

(5) we did not see either members place the object into a fish.

Based on the event (above) and the fact that the team was not in a position to receive a portion of the payout prize, we (as a group) decided not to disqualify the team since, however, the tournament committee was going to discuss the matter with the officers (and membership) of Leggett's Creek Bassmasters.  After discussing this matter behind closed doors and publicly with our 30 member club, we have decided to take the following action steps:

  1. Leggett's Creek membership discussed six options (ranging from no action to refusal of future entries) during their July 29th club meeting
  2. Leggett's Creek membership voted that a polygraph examination be given to the team by a PA State Police officer at the own expense (this was not viable for the contestants)
  3. Leggett's Creek officers then discussed the next option (voted upon by the membership)
  4. Leggett's Creek informed the anglers that future entries into our events will not be allowed, and
  5. We informed the contestants that we considered this matter closed and any sanctions that unfold from other trails or organizations were done without direction from Leggett's Creek and of that tournament trail's own decision.  Please note this message was delivered to the contestants on Wednesday, August 5th.

Leggett's Creek Bassmasters feels that we have taken the necessary steps to protect the image and integrity of our Club, as well as, demonstrating that our club is prepared to take the necessary steps in ensure integrity / honesty is upheld during our events.

We regret how the situation has escalated and hope that the fishing community feels the appropriate steps were taken and because of our action will continue to support our events in the coming months and years.

 Regards,

Leggett's Creek Bassmasters
